Theo Hios

Theo Hios

  • American 1908–1999

Theo Hios was born in the small Greek village of Tripi in 1908. In 1929 Hios followed his father and brother to New York, and five years later enrolled in a Works Progress Administration art class in a public school. By 1937 he was a working member of the W.P.A. During World War II he served as a Marine combat photographer in the Pacific. After the war he studied at the Art Students League with Morris Kantor and Vaclav Vytlacil and had his first solo show in New York at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1947. During his six-decade painting career, his style occasionally turned abstract, but he was mostly admired for the social realism of his expressive portraits and for his visionary views of nature that were sometimes reminiscent of Marsden Hartley. He divided his time between New York City and Hampton Bays, where he had a home from 1949 until his death in 1999.
