The Parrish Art Museum - East End Stories

• Fairfield Porter rarely painted the seashore near his home in Southampton. Most summers were spent in Maine on Great Spruce Head, an island maintained as a family retreat, and perhaps his best-known paintings of the ocean were made there. Yet, Beach, painted in Southampton in the last year of his life, is remarkable for its pared-down sand, sea, and sky. A minimum of detail fixes the scene indelibly and each stroke conveys a maximum amount of sensation.
