George Tooker 1920 - 2011 American Magic Realism, Social Realism Painters
George Tooker was an American realist and figurative painter, who grew up in Bellport, New York, on Long Island. . He graduated from Harvard University with an English degree in 1942, then studied under American painter Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League of New York, where he later taught. Working almost exclusively with tempera paint, his paintings have a simple, flat, and ambiguous quality to them and he was well known in the 1940s and 50s but he painted without recognition for decades until he was rediscovered in the 1980s and celebrated as one of the most unique and mysterious American painters of the 20th century.. This is Tooker’s first work to enter the collection.
