Sag Harbor
- The village of Sag Harbor was originally occupied by the Algonquin Indians. The English created their first permanent settlements in the area in 1730, and by 1760 Sag Harbor had begun to establish itself as a successful whaling port. During its most prosperous period in the early nineteenth century the town’s seaport was second in importance only to New York City. By 1850 the whaling industry as a whole had declined as a result of the discoveries of gold and petroleum elsewhere in the country as well as the relative scarcity of the whale. In place of whaling, Sag Harbor residents turned to such industries as watch-making, pottery, and bottling. The last of these left the area in the 1980s. Over the years Sag Harbor has attracted such notable authors as John Steinbeck and E. L. Doctorow. The town’s sites that have connections to the old whaling district are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
