East Marion
- When English settlers arrived in East Marion in 1661, they called the area Oysterponds because of the multitude of shellfish there. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, fishing and trade supplemented farming, the region’s principal pursuit, and in 1836 the town became known as East Marion in honor of the Revolutionary War General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion. Like other communities on the North Fork, East Marion has hosted many historic figures, including President Grover Cleveland, poet Walt Whitman, and author James Fenimore Cooper. The serene town is known for its picturesque farmlands, bays, inlets, and wildlife preserves.
