Overview

The Advent of the East End Artists’ Colony

This tour begins when the reputation of the East End as an artistic mecca was first secured. In the late 19th century, an improved railroad connection from New York City increased stopovers by artists and socialites alike. As word spread quickly, the visitors began to stay for more than a summer holiday.

Convergence

Convergence begins with events half a world away, in war-torn Europe that shape the future of art in America. A group of Surrealist artists escaped Vichy France for the United States, came to New York and found their way to the East End. This tour focuses on these European artists and the American painters they influenced.

A Sense of Place

For generations, artists have been inspired by the unique landscape of Long Island's East End. This tour through the Parrish's permanent collection features works that capture this sense of place.
